En Argentina viven más de 1.000 especies diferentes de mariposas diurnas, y quizás 10.000 nocturnas ("polillas").
Debido a que muchas especies son absolutamente dependientes de la presencia de ciertas plantas silvestres - las cuales sucumben hoy rápidamente ante el arado, el desmonte y la transformación de los humedales - hace que algunas
especies de nuestras mariposas enfrenten ahora problemas de conservación (es decir, se acercan a la extinción).

Este sitio contiene apenas una pequeña muestra de las muchas especies que viven en Argentina.
Focaliza en las que viven en los alrededores de Buenos Aires, si bien hay algunas del Chaco y de Patagonia.

In Argentina there are over 1,000 different species of butterflies and perhaps 10,000 different moth species.
Many species are entirely dependant on the presence of certain wild plants, which today are quickly vanishing
due to agriculture, the clearing of forests and the transformation of wetlands. As a result many butterfly species
could now be facing conservation problems.

This site contains a small sampling of the many species that live in Argentina. Though it focalizes on the butterflies
that can be seen in the Buenos Aires region, there are also some species from the Chaco and Patagonia.

Butterfly special
If you are interested in butterflies, on your visit to Argentina do consider the possibility of making a fieldtrip to the best hotspots to see and identify many species of butterflies. The best months in this part of the world are March, April and May, thought there are things to see all year round. My good friend Ezequiel Nuñez Bustos is a real expert and can identify even the tiniest one before you'll even notice it is there!
Highly recommended is a visit to the pleasant and quiet island of Martín García, on the River Plate (very close to the coast of Uruguay, though the island belongs to Argentina). There is excellent accomodation to suit all bugets. Free time can be spent on guided tours to many attractive spots and places of historic interest of the island. Tansport is by comfortable boat or catamaran.
The place is literally teeming with many species of butterfly species, many of which can otherwise only be found much further north. Ezequiel can make the transport arangements, and will be at your service during the stay, always ready to visit the various habitats where the different species are flying.

La enorme diversidad de seres vivos hace que no siempre sea tarea sencilla su clasificación en grupos claramente definidos. Muchas veces los criterios elegidos por los hombres de ciencia para agruparlos chocan contra excepciones presentes en la naturaleza.
